Native to the Domincan Republic, the merengue is a dance that began in the middle of the 19th century. Merengue bands consisted originally of a bass drum and gourd. Later the bombardino (a small tuba) was added and at the end of the 19th century the accordion replaced the guitar. The dance is a quick, two-step.
