Other than the human voice, the drum is the oldest of all musical instruments. Today’s modern orchestral music is very demanding of percussion sections because composers are acknowledging and understanding the wide range of sounds and instruments available in the world of percussion. While the variety of percussion instruments is wide, there are four percussion instruments that are commonly found in orchestral music. They are: the snare drum, the bass drum, the tenor drum, and timpani.
