Like the snare drum, the tenor drum descended from medieval tabor. A tenor drum has a head of 16″-18″ in diameter and a depth of 12″-14″ or more. It has no snares and has sound similar to that of a deep tom-tom. The shell is made from wood or metal. The head is normally beaten by two soft-headed sticks that are similar to timpani mallets.
