The tam tam is a hand hammered disk made from a special metal blend. It does not have a specific pitch, rather it has numerous overtones which allows it to blend into any harmony. It usually ranges from 26 to 30 inches in diameter, is suspended by a strong metal stand, and is played with a heavy wool-covered beater. The tam tam is also often confused with the gong, in that it is similar in use and appearance.
