The arrival of R.E.M spawned Jangle-pop, one of the first post-punk movements in America. Exasperating guitar textures coupled with hints of folk music created flavorful melodies in this popular genre. Despite its appealing aesthetic, intentionally vague lyrics and raw - almost amateurish - sound kept the genre far away from the mainstream. The genre lived the burned the bulk of its prominence frm 1984-87, but fell somewhat out of favor in the late 1980's. Representative Artists : R.E.M., Edie Brickell, Camper van Beethoven.
