Goth Alternative Rock

Emerging in the 1980s, Goth-rock grew out of the bleak post-punk rock of the Cure and Joy Division. Goth represents both the subculture and a musical style. As the name implies, the music is painted with melancholy, themes, evocative guitar textures, and haunting vocals singing morbid lyrics. Goth-rock developed out of the desolate post-punk sounds of Bauhaus, Joy Division and the Cure. Despite its fixation with black garments heavy makeup, Goth Rock became one of several genres occupying the space between new wave and alternative. Other representative artists include: Marilyn Manson, Gene Love Jezebel, and Sisters of Mercy.
