A chamber orchestra is an orchestra of reduced proportions. A composition for chamber orchestra will specify an exact number of strings -- fewer than the number usually used in a full modern orchestra. Many pieces for chamber orchestra have been written in the twentieth century, especially during the periods of World War I and World War II, when there were not as many musicians available to perform.
