Bebop or just "bop" is the style developed in the early 1940s by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clark, and others. It was a major break from the popular big band jazz at that time. Bop is often played at extremely fast tempos and the soloists play many fast, rhythmically intricate figures. It usually is played by a small group of piano, bass, drums, and a few wind or brass instruments -- usually saxophone, trumpet, and/or trombone.
