Our goal is to be a "yellow pages" for everything an independent musician might need. Every day, we're adding in new listings, deleting or amending outdated ones, and tailoring each category in order to help you find exactly what you're looking for, as quickly and effectively as possible!
Here's a brief breakdown of what each search field is for:
CATEGORY:
This field is like the "subject" titles in your local phone book. If, for example, you're looking to book a tour, "Clubs & Other Venues" would be the category you'd choose.COMPANY:
This field allows you to search for a specific company within the database. For example, if you know you want to send a copy of your CD to fAZE3 magazine for review, but don't know the address, you would use this field.ADDRESS:
These fields (Address, City, State, Zip Code & Country) allow you to specify your search geographically. For example, if you have a gig in Chicago and want to send out promotional materials to writers there, you would type in "Chicago" in the City field, along with "Music Press" in the Category field. Or if you're touring in your home state of Wisconsin and want to send materials to radio stations along your circuit, you could search for just radio stations in Wisconsin.
*In the specific Address field, you don't have to put the entire street address.
For example, if you're looking for a club in NYC, and you know it's on Bowery but can't remember its name, just search for "Clubs & Other Venues" on "Bowery" in "New York" (for the record, it's best to search for "New York" in the state category. Some of our researchers might type in "New York", "New York City", or "NYC" in the City field - this is something we're working on standardizing, but for now, using the State field will probably work best!)GENRE:
This field allows you to make sure that when you're sending out materials to people, you're sending them to people who are interested in the kind of music you make. We're actively adding new genre options, so you might want to run one search with a genre chosen, and another one without a genre selected. This way you can compare the two lists, and be sure that your genre isn't a recent addition that hasn't been fully updated yet.*HOW MANY FIELDS SHOULD I ENTER INFORMATION INTO?
You can enter choices in as many, or as few search fields as you like, depending on what information you're looking for. For example: If you're a ska band booking a tour, and need a gig in Georgia, you would choose "Clubs & Other Venues" as your Category, "Georgia" as your State, and "Ska" as your genre, leaving all of the other fields blank. After that, you might want to run a search just for "Clubs & Other Venues" in "Georgia" without a genre listed. This way, you might find some other clubs that don't specialize in ska, but might book you anyway.*I TRIED TO GET A LIST OF ALL THE FM RADIO STATIONS IN THE DATABASE AND GOT AN ERROR MESSAGE. WHY?
Unfortunately, if too many listings come up from your response, you will get an error message. Some categories have thousands of entries, so the more fields you fill in, the better chance you'll have of finding exactly what you need. Giving ORION more to work with will help limit or "filter" the responses it gives back to you.*I SEARCHED MY HOMETOWN, AND FOUND SOME INCORRECT INFORMATION. WHY?
From time to time, it's certainly possible that you'll find outdated information in the database. Every day agents retire, new clubs open, publications move to new offices - this is why the industry trade publications are out of date by the time they get to the printer, and it's also why we need your help! If you find that any outdated information is listed, or if you know of some folks who should be in here but aren't, please email us at contact@indiegroup.com and we'll have it fixed as soon as we can (usually within 24 hours!) If everyone who uses the database helps us to keep it current, then all of you out there are helping each other. This is of course, a fantastic thing! And thanks to everyone who's helped out and volunteered information so far - your efforts are much more appreciated that you know, and it's great that you're taking the time to help us all have correct information at our fingertips.
