Soukous

During the 1960s, the soukous became the most important urban Congolese style. American Soul can be heard in the use of saxophone riffs. But the most important departure from the Rumba style was the use of Lingala lyrics. Despite being little understood in most of the Congo, Lingala is an important language in the capitol city, Kinshasa.
