Pop Reggae is pop songs performed with a slight reggae lilt. The beat is mildly skanking, and sometimes the vocalists toast, but the essential form is pop and the music is targeted to a pop audience. During the '70s, such diverse rockers as Eric Clapton and the Clash experimented with reggae, and the entire 2-Tone ska revival movement of the early '80s was closely aligned with reggae. Nevertheless, it wasn't until the '80s, when artists UB40, Eddy Grant and Maxi Priest all established a place for it on the charts, that pop-reggae became part of the mass conscious, and once it reached the charts, it remained a fixturein pop music throughout the '90s.
