Opera was composed first in Italy around 1600 and has remained a popular genre since its birth. Opera combines music and drama and features singers with an orchestral accompaniment. The music of Richard Wagner (1813-1883) represents the pinnacle of German romantic opera and was his attempt to create a "total art work."
