A natural outgrowth of the contemporary philosophical movement, New Age music ranges from contemplative Easy Listening to meditational Zen music. It is recognized by its airy instrumentals and often Asian influences. With an original fusion of clarinet, Japanese koto, and shakuhachi flute, the New Age record that sparked the revolution in the music industry was Tony Scott's "Music for Zen Mediation," released to puzzled audiences in 1964. Breaking into more mainstream markets in the mid-1980s, New Age music is now included on many Easy Listening radio stations' play lists. Key artists: Philip Aaberg, Enigma, Enya, John McLaughlin, John Tesh, Vangelis, George Winston, and Yanni.
