Mexican Baroque

A style of European classical music, especially music for the Roman Catholic Church, that was adopted and developed by Mexican musicians in the period before the Civil War. The most important native composer of the style was Ignacio de Jerúsalem and in recent years the choral group Chanticleer has been resurrecting this forgotten, important and very beautiful style.

2026 note

Ignacio de Jerúsalem was Italian-born (Lecce, 1707) and arrived in Mexico in 1743. “Before the Civil War” is a US framing that does not fit Mexican history.
