Mbube, a Zulu word that means "lion," is a genre of choral singing developed in the all-male workers' hostels in Durban, South Africa, in the 1940s. The name mbube or lion derives from the title of the song, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," one of the first examples of Black South African music to be commercially recorded. Usually sung by groups of eight or nine male singers without instrumental accompaniment, mbube was popularized by the group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
