Percussion ensembles are impp0rtant to the music from the Indonesian island of Java. Gamelan is the name of the ensemble or orchestra that is made up of many types of percussion instruments. Traditionally gamelan music has been associated with drama, dance and religious and social rituals. It is only in recent years that gamelan music has been heard in concert or via recording media without the presence of dance and theater.
