In the 1930s, afro-jazz (or township jazz) was a dance-band style that imitated the Afro-American Count Basie-style and was cultivated by middle-class Blacks living in the segregated urban townships. Although this style was seen as an alternative to the earlier marabi songs, township jazz retained the simple harmonies of the earlier style.
