Review:
Whoa! I think that maybe TheSCAM is being a bit modest with their genre classifications on "This is the Life." Although it does have genuinely funky groove moments, this is some pretty sophisticated Rock that covers A LOT of musical territory. I would encourage listeners to listen to the whole tune at least two or three times to get your arms around what's going on. From funk grooves to floating vocal melodies to guitar driven comps over a folk-like celesta tine melody, this tune has a lot of expression. I'd like to hear more from TheSCAM and also like to see them live. Well done.

Lyrics
Let it all fall,
bring it all down
‘cause he's going nowhere.
I'll string him up
if you hold him down
and he ain't going nowhere.
He wants to be wanted —
well he has to be hunted.
And he's cut to the quick
but you'll know as soon as
he comes round...
I ran into the street
when I heard you scream:
I thought it was serious.
Just postmodern angst —
you were letting off steam —
and I thought you were serious.
It's something you take up
when you start wearing make-up
and it cuts to the quick
but you can turn it off
whenever you choose.
This is better than pain.
I wish to God it would rain
and wash away all those dreams
in the flood, in the streams
in the mud, all around you.
I'll catch my death on my own.
I wish to God she would phone
but she's still there
in my clothes and my hair
and I'm supposed not to care
for a day or two.
This is the life,
the time of your life.
This is the life,
the time of your life.
But you know me,
I love a good moan.
You know me:
there's nothing like a good moan.
Find me someone I can prove
I'm healthier than —
Find me someone smaller
and I'll prove I'm a man —
Find me someone stupid
and I'll prove that I can —
oh oh oh.
Did you see the news?
That bit about you
or someone just like you?
Dredged up from the Thames,
he thought he could fly
and he looked something like you.
And if you're all so clever
how come you never knew?
He was cut to the quick
but he still had several
up on you.
This is better than pain.
I wish to God it would rain
and wash away all those dreams
in the flood, in the streams
in the mud, all around you.
I'll catch my death on my own.
I wish to God she would phone
but she's still there
in my clothes and my hair
and I'm supposed not to care
for a day or two.
This is the life,
the time of your life.
This is the life,
the time of your life.
Full Description
A song about everything and nothing. Bits of it ring true - the rain and the floods especially - but the whole means less than the sum of its parts. I think the man who was dredged up from the Thames may have been based on a real news story, but I can't remember. Musically as well it's pasted together from various ideas - a funk riff, a post-indie verse and chorus, a quirky middle-eight and a bit that sounds like a child's music box. But has that sing-along hook in the chorus that makes it another favourite at live gigs.
