Why do ListenSmart need to collect email addresses before allowing listeners to download songs?

They say they need this info in order to pay the artists but I just don't get it. This seems really bogus
to me, I don't mind them forcing people to download from a listensmart page with banner ads on top
but the email address thing is sure to scare people off.

I doubt any of JamFree's fans (we do have a few ) will be willing to give out their email address to
download our music and not all of them realize they can give a fake one.

I need an answer to this question (if I don't get it here I'll try emailing Sean) or this policy has to
change for JamFree to stay on this site.

I like a lot of what ListenSmart has to offer but email addresses are like phone numbers, people
should be able to keep them private, I think it's insulting to ask someone for this information with out
a damn good reason.

This was a primary reason for us bailing on MP3c, they spammed the hell out of people who innocently offered they're email address. ListenSmart states they won't send emails to those who
don't want them but who will they give the email addresses to?

Peace and Love,
Stephen

Can someone tell me if there is any chance of this policy changing?

Thanks for the post. We're currently revising the downloading process to make it a little more seamless. The idea is that as long a person's cookies are enabled, they will only have to enter their email address once. (Not once per visit... just once) Also, it is the policy of ListenSmart.com that we will not send any unsolicited emails. However, should someone check the box that says "send me more info," it allows us the ability to maximize the monetization of that service. (i.e. more advertising dollars to go into the artist pool) Additionally, it is used as a means of tracking downloads so that one listener doesn't get credit for multiple downloads of the same song.

One last thing to consider... MP3.com requires an email address for both downloads and streams. Although we're very open to changing/ editing features, we're using that as a benchmark to show that traffic doesn't suffer.

I hope this helps to clarify things a bit. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks for the reply Ben.

I can understand your desire to have as much info about your visitors as you can (demographics are important to most businesses). I can understand it but I don't have to like it .

I don't know how you have things set up but I just can't see email addresses as being much benefit when determining the validity of downloads. Surely there are more secure ways for you to track visitors, I always leave fake email addresses and most of my peers do as well.

Right now my feelings against this policy outweigh my need to have music on your site so I have held back from putting JamFree's 'real' tunes on Listensmart as well as 3 other bands I have.

I am still considering making Listensmart the home of our music and look forward to evaluating your CD program but for the reasons I stated and a few others I'll be waiting in the wings.

We just don't need you badly enough to compromise anything, I hope this clarifys our position a bit .

Peace and Love,
Stephen

I understand and respect your position. It's obvious that you are looking out for the best interest of your fans. I hope that it has been obvious that we are (and will continue to be) very open and receptive to policy and feature changes. So down the line it may be evident that the email function is a deterent, but for now, we're going to give it a test run.

Thanks again for the post.
