http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/010420/n20165161_2.html Each recording is unique. Like a fingerprint. So all that remains is for someone to develop the tech and implement it. This way, computers can search the Net for fingerprints, not file names or types. Allowing each and every copyright owner to see how many copies of his or her recording is on the Net at any given time. This technology will clear up Peer to Peer swapping networks in an instant. The way around it? Remixes. Altering the recording to change the fingerprint. But then it may not be the same desirable recording. It still does not affect CD burners. It still not affect one on one swapping. But it does move swapping away from the mass transfer arena to the individual arena. And it is the endgame of all this brouhaha called Napster. And the endgame is where we want to get as soon as possible. So we know what kind of business we can do, if any. To read the article, click on the link in bold at the top of this post. i think fingerprints are good. but it seems that all that would be needed to chang the finger print (i'm assuming they mean the wav files image) would to insert one second of silence at some given point and then remove it after a download. here's some intelligent whining from the napster bb: quote: somehow i fail to "feel his pain" ------------------ [This message has been edited by deel (edited 04-21-2001).] IP: Logged |

quote: What deel is trying to say is: Greedy Bastards! As far as changing the fingerprint? It is possible. But maybe not. At some point it is no longer the desired audio recording. Adding one second just adds something to the fingerprint, not changing it, for example. Look deel. Picture of pretty woman. MP3 files and WAV files are digital and anything that is digital can be scrambled using encryption schemes. A downloadable program could encrypt/decrypt the files using several well known schemes as well as custom schemes. And for the novice, load a song into most WAV editors and instruct the software to reverse the file and you have a really cool new "backwards" song to listen to and it doesn't match the original at all. Just reverse it again at the receiving end. "fingerprinting is a weak idea, goodbye!" ------------------ [This message has been edited by CBH3 Records (edited 04-21-2001).] IP: Logged |

quote: Well, encryption schemes may work. But those take the swapping out of the mass market. Seems to me that the high tech geniuses would just do it all through private means. And as for the other? A reverse fingerprint is still the same fingerprint. And I would think that these people would move out of the mass market also. In other words, what fingerprinting does is move the swapping to the high tech fringes. Where it used to be. I mean right now people are bitching about the file name blocking. (Greedy Bastards) How low tech is that? And how low tech is this? [image not archived] ------------------ IP: Logged |

Actually, on Mars it's called tendril printing. Not really fingers, you see. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, encryption schemes may work. But those take the swapping out of the mass market. If the average Joe can figure out how to rip a CD and create MP3's of all the tracks, then he can download a program to decrypt a file. It would work like this: Open the downloaded file, type in the code provided, save the file as a new name. This could even be written as a plugin for Winamp. The code number could be provided as part of the filename like: "talicaMet Mansand Enter - X43H187" Or the code could be listed on a pirate website along with the coded song names. People will go to great lengths to make this shit work now that the box has been opened, and for the feeble, they can just visit a Napster clone site that hasn't been shutdown yet. Also, a backwards file is not the same if you've ever looked at the waveforms. ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Well, your evaluation of the abilities of the average Joe and mine are very different, I guess. Napster? You don't have to do anything. It has a player in the software. All you gotta do is type a name in search. Like "Phil Frazier". Click on the file and it downloads and plays in the player. Low, low, low tech. CD ripping to MP3's yourself? Higher tech. Encryption and codes and pirate sites? Way above the average Joe. The backwards wave file thing you describe may work for a while. Just like the Pig Latin file name encryption thing worked for a week or two. But it is still the same file, just reversed. And once it gets to be a mass market practice the fingerprinting technology can be instructed to look for that. So, like I said. I don't agree with you about the average Joe. The average Joe still seems pretty dumb to me. Unlike smart guys like you and me. And this girl. Who has a PhD. [image not archived] ------------------ IP: Logged |

I must say, I do like the value added service you provide in your posts, Kenny. My idea of the "true" average Joe is that he probably doesn't even own a computer and if he does, he uses it to play Deer Hunter and email Mom. So I guess my previous statements are aimed at the average Napster user which are people that I think are fairly tech savvy, enough to install Napster, Winamp, etc. and many of them have broadband because Napster on a 56K modem is like watching grass grow. ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Well, just like Esquire and Playboy, some people like listensmart.com for the intelligent writing. While some just like to look at the pictures. [image not archived] Me, I like both. As far as the average Napster user? Well, I think the reason Napster is so popular is because all you have to do is click on a self-installing setup file. Napster does all the rest. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I believe in working fingerprints of music files when I see them. I still can't see any really working OCR, how do they expect that one to work with much more complex things like music files? ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Necessity is the mother of invention, WS. The ability to fingerprint content is key to being able to track copywritten content on the net. It means a lot more to a lot more people than putting a man on the moon. So, I expect they will figure it out. Speaking of the dark side of the moon. Does anyone here know/use the software MP3TRIM (http://members.home.com/mp3trim/)? A great tool that one can normalize MP3s and cut away unnecessary space at the start/end of MP3 files - without converting them to WAV first, that means without any loss in quality. Easy, don't you think? Ha! Even this simple thing can't be automated (until now), you always have to check the results. I really like this software, but the part that is pretty much similar to the fingerprint technology (it's the easiest kind of a fingerprint, an empty one) does a pretty bad job. Okay, to what I know this software is unique, so maybe other programmers can do better jobs on that. And maybe the fingerprints lead to a better mp3trim Bye ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Smart people everywhere realize the beauty of the human form, HM. It is after all, the inspiration, Muse as it were, for many great artists throughout history. My own artistic works are inspired by a variety of beautiful humans throughout my career. But, we are also here to talk business. And the only business making money on the internet involves the beauty of the human form. So, combining music and pictures of beautiful people makes sense to me. For those artists in search of further inspiration? [image not archived] Hmmmm. Anybody inspired yet? ------------------ IP: Logged |

Anyhow, the only photos that may interest you come from a place called Area 51. It's not much, but it's all we earthlings have right now. [image not archived] As far as the human form? Well, there are large number of amateur photos available. Which contain quite a bit of cellulite but possibly no silicon. [image not archived] Scan these photos with your large black lenses, ATom2. Tell us what you see.
