Peter Gabriel looks like he is ready to Shock the Internet Monkey his own self.

http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/apr2001/nf2001049_493.htm

quote:
From the BW article:

"The way Gabriel and OD2 co-founder Charles Grimsdale picture it, rent-a-track will work like this: Listeners will subscribe to a music service built around their taste, be it jazz, rock, Wagner's operas, or bagpipe ensembles. For a monthly fee, probably a few dollars, customers will be entitled to listen to as much music as they like and download tracks to play later. However, each track will contain a digital license that expires after, say, a month and renders the song unplayable. Customers will have to pay more for a permanent copy. "It gives people a chance to check out things they would not otherwise get access to," explains Gabriel, whose reserved and polite demeanor contrasts with his hard-driving hits like Sledgehammer."

The key elements appear to be time expiration dates for downloads combined with the "rental" concept. The time expiration idea being one I and others have floated for a solution to the FREE download business. Kind of like demo software that only works for 14 days or something. Of course there are ways around it.

Will it work? Well, Peter G is kicking it off in June. We will soon know.

Huzzah, Hooyay, Whoa

obviously.. digital audio out to dat.

it is interesting to see so many artists scrambling for "service" oriented systems..
people will get sick of paying for a service everytime they turn around.

i think most of the file sharers are looking for stuff that is rare or off the beaten path.
i sure as hell wouldn't pay for a copy of sledgehammer, it's been played to death.

You forget deel. Smart people and stupid people are different.

Stupid people just download the most popular songs.

I do not know. It's easy to check though. Unfortunately the stupid people don't know how.

The market for stupid people is real crowded. A lot of competition there. MP3.com has now become the leader in recruiting stupid people and stupid recording artists. They even have their names in bold so you will know who they are.

Not that I have anything against stupid people. I just do not want to discuss things with them.

I really like stupid females, for instance. They have brought me great pleasure over the years. And we hardly talk at all.

I know for a fact that ListenStupid is in use. Alot of places that I have been while playing in the band, I have heard them say ListenStupid. They point at me when they mention it. I explain to them that I am on ListenSmart. They don't seem to get it cause as soon as I start to walk away I hear it again. Oh well. I try!
