Thanks Stephen. Hopefully this hearing will be archived on the net somewhere.

Especially troubling to me is this quote:

quote:
Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the committee's senior Democrat, said there is some support in the House and Senate for compulsory online licensing. But Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, seemed cool to the idea, saying compulsory licenses might violate international treaties.

Hatch floated his own idea, however: Offer record labels tax incentives to encourage them to put their catalogs online.

"We know we're going into a new age," Hatch said. But, he said, "It seems to me very slow in the making."

Sounds to me like somebody got to Orrin Hatch.

Last year he was pushing compulsory licensing big time. Oh well, everybody has their price, even Orrin.

Without compulsory licensing, the RIAA can fuck with everybody that opens up a music site. Also, it makes it harder for us independents to get paid. A compulsory license is much easier and cheaper to enforce.

Also interesting to me is that Hank Barry of Napster is really pushing for compulsory licensing this year. Last year he said no.

What a difference a year makes.

I've been busy with songwriters today, I'm gonna look for that hearing.

Thanks for posting the link.

It's just you and me here now. I never should have asked everyone what those chords were.

HaHa, indeed.

In my quest to find out how many SMART people are in the music business online? I found only one. You knew the chords. Even the hard ones. No one else has a clue.
Even though they sometimes play the hard chords. Or maybe sometimes they sample them. Whatever.

Todays Senate Hearing is archived at www.c-span.org . Linked from the front page, even.

It is a fascinating, yet frustrating session.

No sign of any resolution to anything for anyone. Which is good for the RIAA in it's continued stranglehold on the business side of music. And bad for everyone ele.

Don Henley and Alanis Morisette are representing the artists real well. Bringing a more organized artists viewpoint to the discussion than has been there previously.

Hank Barry made a hell of a case for compulsory licensing. The RIAA said we are working it all out, don't worry.

Unlike last year, the Senators decided to employ one of my favorite strategies. Act stupid. Whereas last year, they were real smart. Which tells me, someone has told them to do nothing as long as possible.

Unheard of still was the only voice that matters, the consumers. 100 million people plus. Who aren't really concerned because they can still use Napster, plus their CD burners and other services to get whatever music they want for free.

Orrin Hatch had some dumb tax incentive plan proposal he threw out. To reward the record labels for licensing their music. Egad!

They must have found pictures of Orrin Hatch with a 14 year old nymphet and a vial of crack. Cause he has sure changed his tune.

After watching this hearing, which I enjoyed and learned a lot from, I am reminded of a Hunter Thompson quote:

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench...a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

Emblazoned at one of my new favorite information sites www.therecordindustry.com

Isn't Orrin an alien, I mean real Alien. You have to admit if Aliens were among us, can you imagine any better form than their leader to take?

This shit will get really interesting when Hollywood Movie Studios go on the offensive. There are a whole lot of movies being traded online, a whole lot.

Things don't look to good, fairly typical. The internet is still cool though and they just might not ever be able to control it.
Unfortunately the 'real' world hasn't changed much for the better.

I'm just gonna keep playin and teach my child.

Hey, Alien would be an improvement over what I saw yesterday.

But I have listened to Orrin's music.

Believe me, it is of this earth. Any lifeform smart enough to develop interstellar travel would have more intelligence in their music.

Plus, an Alien would want to destroy the power structures of this planet. The RIAA and MPAA being two of them.

Hank Barry may be an Alien. Alanis Morisette? She definitely could be.

Anyhow, after yesterdays hearing it looks like this shit will go on, keeping artists in limbo until the Supreme Court finally hears this case.

Years from now, as it now looks.

Oh well, back to plan B for everyone.

Or is that Plan 9?

Ah, Davey Boy Crocky watched the hearing. But then, he is a big Alanis Morrisette fan since she did that nude video of "Thank You".

As you can tell, the verbally handicapped Davey Boy is a big fan of compulsory licensing. But wants to take a shit on Orrin Hatch's head. But then Orrin also does not like some of the pretty woman pictures being available on the internet.

Look real close at this one Davey Boy.
