This weekend, a songwriter I am working with emailed me two messages. One had an attachment. A Virus scan showed no problem.

Inside, however was MTX.9244.A aka the Matrix.

One nasty motherfucker. Firewall caught it immediately when it tried to dial out. A quick call to my tech buddies let me know I was in the shit. I downloaded one of the only programs that can deal with it. F-PROT.

Disinfected/deleted most of it. But not the rest. My tech buddy had to remove a bunch of my operating system at the base level and reinstall it to keep me from having to reformat.

So, a day later, I seem to be back with no apparent problems.

But this virus is not detectable by Norton's, MacAfee or Dr Solomon's.

It lies in your computer and emails itself to every one you know. Slowing destroying your files and OS in the process.

What I learned from this experience is?

Accept no attachments. Even from your closest buddies. Never ever ever. Even if Nortons says it is OK. Cause viruses have evolved.

The guy who it came from didn't know he had it. Just that his computer was starting to have lots of problems. Now, all his friends got to have their computers disinfected. (Sorry, honey but I have given you a disease. I didn't know. Forgive me.)

I publish this info here for two reasons, first, as a warning to everyone. Secondly, so that those who have decided I am an asshole may take some pleasure out of my suffering.

Well, in one week I have encountered the "Napster uninformed" crowd and the Matrix virus, deel.

All in all, a pretty good week.

Something like having an electric guitar and someone telling you never to plug it in.

And if this had happened downloading a file do we never download files? Just wait until they start attaching these things to mp3's.

A lot of attachments are just junk and should be deleted, certainly if they are from someone you don't know. But I exchange music files with people I am collaborating with, documents, etc., and it's hard to imagine not sharing an occasional photo with family members and friends. I guess if it happened to me I'd feel differently. But doesn't it just suck that we have access to this technology, and some bozo's have nothing better to do with their brains than to come up with this crap. I suppose it could be worse. These guys might be taking their lack of decency out on people instead of people's computers.

bob, there are lots of way to get your photo's, music and info to people without having to use attachments.

To me, these computer viruses are appropriately named. And the correct analogy is with a real world virus, like Ebola or HIV or something. It's not like not being able to plug in your electric guitar, it's more like not being able to plug in your penis. If? they found out that condoms didn't work anymore?

The Norton's condom don't work with the Matrix virus, bob. The McAfee penicillin won't work, bob.

So you got to keep your attachment in your pants, bob.
