IUMA Suspends Operations A Letter from Jeff & Antony February 7, 2001 Dear IUMA Artists, As most of you know, this is both an amazing and painful time for the music industry. As the Internet revolutionizes the way music is distributed, independent artists have gained unprecedented access to fans throughout the world. Unfortunately, it hasn't come without costs. This has been a hard time for Internet music companies as the rules that govern what we do change on a daily basis. Many of our competitors and peers are either going out of business or dealing with myriads of lawsuits waged against them. No one seems to be making it through this tough time unscathed, IUMA included. When EMusic acquired IUMA in June of 1999, they agreed to fund our growth through the end of 2000. Unfortunately, due to the current state of the industry, EMusic has decided not to renew our funding going forward. Without their funding, we're unable to maintain the quality of service we've been known for in the past and have had to eliminate the entire staff. Consequently, while we work on finding new sources of funding for IUMA, we are closing the community to new artists and eliminating many of our services. We think that you will find this a mixed blessing. On one hand, some programs and site features will be cut; including anything that required human interaction - CD sales, customer support, new artist submissions, etc. On the other hand, the site will look and feel the same, artist pages will still be functional, existing artists will still be able to modify their sites, and fans will be focused on a core group of artists who are featured more regularly. It pains us to have to resort to these drastic measures, but it seems we have no other choice. If, by doing this we can live to fight another day, the decision will be worthwhile. In the interim, several IUMA artists have already asked about taking a more prominent role in the community and have volunteered to moderate bulletin boards, etc. If you are interested in a role as BBS moderator, please send a short letter describing your background and which boards interest you to [email protected]. Last year was an amazing year for us. We held our first music video competition with EVEO, worked with ideaLive to fund several artist projects, partnered with the Jenny Jones Show in the quest for house bands, hosted the largest nationwide college band search, rewarded ten families for adopting the IUMA name into their fold, and saw over a dozen bands get signed to major and independent labels, including Gangsta Bitch Barbie, Pressure 4-5, Clark W Griswald and Soul Chasm. We'd like to thank you for being part of our most successful year to date and we hope to be here to serve you again soon. Sincerely, Antony Brydon ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, I guess Rene was right after all. Well, I guess www.ampcast.com puts another one under. Hey, wait a minute, I'm on IUMA! Better go get my stuff. Seriously, folks. I'd say this is another sign that the OMD world we have known is on the way out. Since, it never really worked? Maybe that's a good thing. Who knows? Coming soon: The Napster Network. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, it looks like iuma.com is in a similar boat with listensmart.com. Keeping up the existing site with minimal staff. No new artists, accepted, of course. No pay for downloads, of course. Just a big site on automatic. And, hey!! I'm on both of these sites!! But I guess the evaluation both have made is to coast until investment comes along. Generating a small amount of ad banner income with a minimal overhead. The last time I checked, amp3.com is still there, too. You just can't get to the pages. Anyhow, since none of these sites accept new artists? It won't be long till we got the market cornered. ------------------ IP: Logged |

IUMA was lame. So lame in fact that they never bothered to figure out that Phil Frazier had a page there with no material. I put up a page there last year but never bothered to go back after I read that content providers were receiving checks for 26 cents & such. What a joke. ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Apparently the financial community agrees with you, Phil. In times like these I turn to the pros. This is about MP3.com. But it could be IUMA.com too.
