http://a_ero.tripod.com/aero/

These people have some interesting links especially about Universal (UMG) and their nazi licensing policies:
http://a_ero.tripod.com/aero/id10.html

They also like MP3.com apparently which I don't agree with but to each his own, I guess.

Glad to see more artist rights orgs popping up.

I checked AERO out. I sent them to www.indiestore.com to get a few insights about mp3.con. Perhaps these ppl are just ignarant and need some educating. It is good to see that others are waking up to Artist Rights.

The Universal licensing is downright ridiculous.

If you download "content" from Universal, the license terminates on your Death. So your family can't listen to the swell MP3 tunes that you bought on-line. You also can't transfer the content from one computer to another. Nevermind if you have a laptop and a desktop. Universal is also trying to corner the market. Checkout the Aero site link for more info.

Aero has a lot of good points. Hopefully they will catch on that MP3.con is not for Artist Rights.

I think MP3.com may have been involved in organizing AERO. I doubt they will "discover" anything negative about their major sponsor.

As spokesperson and founder of AERO, I'd like to take a moment to clear a few things up as a couple of you have very reasonable and concerning questions regarding AERO's purpose and origin. Dr. O, as you can imagine, I was a bit dismayed by your implication.

Here goes...
First and foremost, AERO was not created by nor is funded or publicly supported by MP3.com. Even if it were, that would not stop us from investigating formal complaints from artists on that site. Investigation is part of what we do as a service to other artists, but it requires that we have multiple (3 or more) official complaints.
Thus far, despite numerous private (person to person) complaints from various artists about Mp3.com, not one has filed a formal complaint with AERO. We have encouraged (and will continue to) these artists to come forward, but either they are waiting to see what will happen (whether artist pages and P4P will be corrected) or are worried it might jeopardize the existance of their page there or they have not found the time to do so.

We know that there are problems on Mp3.com and have made an effort over the last several months to communicate with Mp3.com staff.
I have them written both as an artist and on behalf of AERO.
Dr. O, being that you are also on Mp3.com, you may remember a few weeks back that Mp3 posted a notice about site problems on the artist log in? That was created a couple of days after an official mail from AERO, asking that they notify artists of site-wide problems on log-in.

Perhaps it would also help to give you a bit of background on myself and the origin of AERO.
I am an independent performer who began collaborating with other projects/musicians in 1996 and playing live in 1997. In 1999, after recording a solo ep, I came across Mp3.com, created a page there and wound up getting to know several other artists.
From 1997-1999, I interned with the indie label TwinTone Records (Replacements, Soul Asylum, MindphaseOne, Greazy Meal etc.) here in Minneapolis. Over my years as a performer, I've also worked with artists such as Prince and NPG, Praga Khan/Lords Of Acid, and The Busy Signals. I have paid my "dues" and am only too familiar with the challenges we as artists are faced with in our daily lives and from a business stand point.

I wanted to do something to help others, in whatever way I could. I did not like what I saw happening to numerous artists at Major Labels (and sometimes smaller ones) and made it a point to educate myself. As a child and a young adult, I was mortified by some of the stories my Grandfather told me about artists
as well as the broadcasting world (he was a jockey and later VP for a company called Storez Braodcasting through out the 50's. 60's, 70's). I began studying the Industry several years ago, but happened across a series of very important books as well as inside information this year.

One of those books was Hit Men, written in the early 90's by Frederik Dannen. After finishing Dannen's expose (which mentioned some of the artists my Grandfather interviewed and had stories about) and being sent a copy of Courtney Love's speech on the same afternoon, I had a rude awakening. I realized that the big business politics of the '50's, 60's and 70's were threantening to make themselves right at home on the internet.

I founded AERO that week. It was originally called L-TAM (Liberate The Airwaves Movement). After talking with numerous online artists (at Mp3, IUMA and the indie label we're on- Sursumcorda.com), I began speaking with members of the local scene here in Minneapolis. I drafted the original Equal Rights petition with their feedback, and got together with other locals to record a protest track (RADIO-FREE).
AERO officially became AERO in August.
I built the site and uploaded the existing signatures. As things stand right now, the site is on Tripod and will not support audio files. That, and for the reason that most of the participating/involed artists have sites on Mp3.com, is why we have the audio outpost there.

I began appealing to other organizations for support and a few responded- MP3.com was not one of them. We have infact asked them (several times) for their assistance in raising awareness, and have not recieved any feed back.
We are currently looking at registering in the state of Minnesota as a Non-Profit, and are appealing for grants from Resources and Counselling from the Arts (here in St. Paul) and to 1def-ear-ent.com. Before we can file for non-profit, we have to come up with a budget, as well as a projected budget for two years (required by the IRS)- not to mention the funds to register (several hundred dollars, which I do not have to invest at the moment).

Again, AERO is a network created by ARTISTS
for ARTISTS in the interest of establishing rights that are long over due.
We also make it a habit to respect others rights, opinions and needs. Until we have three formal and justified complaints- whether it's a label, performing venue, publisher or site- AERO can not publicly proceed with an investigation.

What you choose to do for your rights is entirely up to you, but we're here if you need us and would appreciate your support.
If you have any other questions or concerns, or information to report, do not hesitate to email me at:
[email protected]
Thanks,
Brooke R. M. Aldridge

Sounds like a fantastic and worthwhile effort. I'll be happy to support you in any way that I can, keep up the good work. Feel free to email me if you have any ideas on how JamFree might help your org.

Can you investigate whether it's true that Michael Robertson has a small penis?

Just kidding.

Peace and Love,
Stephen LeBlanc

Thanks for the info, Brooke! Sorry about the MP3c comments but some of us are a wee bit angry at them... It sounds like you have a good thing going and I look forward to further discussions. Thanks also for bringing up the UMG material on your site.

Where does AERO stand on the issue of the legality of the BEAM-IT/Instant Listening service?

aero,

there are many that believe that MP3c violated the laws willfully.

there are many who believe this was a big scam to force settlements with majors. ever thought about that? They PLANNED this since day one so they could gain access to mainstream catalogs, make their money from major acts and dump the indies. A moderator at MP3c named Paradise basically conveyed this directly to a trusted site-member here.

Put that in your pipe...
