Did P4P at MP3.com come to be AFTER the demise of MY.MP3.COM service?

Considering I am a firm believer in what comes around goes around I am curious if the
timeing of these 2 events occured as i stated
in the title of the thread.

If so, I would say MP3.COM mearly started the
p4p program as a scam.

Granted many musicians have made cash off the
deal but I would personally prefer to make
cash from my music clean.

Sorry people but I wont lie. I do hope

MP3.COM

goes away. I saw the direction they took along time ago and I saw the deceit and
loss of that direction.

For those of you who werent around there
2 to 3 years ago I guess I can tell you
it was trully a different environment and allot of fun.

Too bad. Personally I would like to know
who was responsible for many of the blunderous decisions that were made there
to lead to the inevitable end of

MP3.COM

No. My.mp3.com launched a few months after PfP started. (PfP started Dec 99). OTOH, the public display of PfP started after the my.mp3.com problems started and was certainly a PR move aimed at demonstrating respect for copyright and for the idea that artists should be paid.

Of course they consistantly demonstrate that they actually have no respect for the idea that artists should be paid, but that's another story.

Yep - it was started about the time that the IUMA one was started.

But the Dr. is correct - they have very little respect for artists, and simply used us as a bunch of traffic statistics.

Imagine if they had invested even half the money and effort they have blown on pursuing the mainstream in building up the indie bands they had on the site... Man that would have been sweet....

Now instead all they have done is provided the mainstream record companies with a whole giant pile of free money, that has been once again derived from the hard work of many many artists...

Its really sad.

this is all so completely bizarre and sick.

a global mindf**k of cosmopolitain proportions.

the buzzword for a long time on the other aabb has been use the tools.

while the mantra for their machine was use the fools.

do they still ask for your social security number in order to get paid for pfp?

According to an article I saw, my.mp3.com was started in Sept. 99 even though it wasn't unleashed on the public yet. P$P started on 11/1/99.

They started working on my.mp3.com in Sept, 99. The launch date was Jan 10, 00 (according to the judge in the Universal case). A little earlier than I remember, but still after PfP started.

PfP was clearly a response to IUMA's revenue sharing... IUMA was actually running ads challenging any other OMD to pay the artists (was AMP3 already defunct by then?).

As I remember it (I really can't!) both IUMA and MP3.c started the game as a response to AMP3. At least that's how it felt for people heavily associated with AMP3.

My.MP3 was meant to explore and push the boundaries of fair usage. Verifying an existing CD was a smoke and mirror attempt at legitimacy. It was obvious that MP3.c was benefitting from copyrights the didn't own, and that's a no-no in courts.

I feel mp3.c got actually lucky with Napster's popularity. It shifted the focus (for a little while) away from them as the main bad guys in the eyes of RIAA.

Payback for Playback started on Nov. 1, 1999. My.MP3.com/Beam-It was launched in mid-January, 2000.

I believe the two plans to be entirely independent of one another.

Actually, I think P4P was a response to AMP3's press release that they had paid out however much it was to their artists for the first time...cuz I swear it wasn't even weeks after that that MP3 announced P4P. Also, AMP3 went down the last week of February, 2000. I remember it vividly, as it was at the time the only site that housed my music at all.

I've been real busy lately because I have recently signed up with some exciting new bands. In my view mp3.con never had respect for indies and was merely using them . All their talk no longer fooled me. I saw the changes right after the IPO. I paid close attention to their actions not the propaganda of the Spin Docs. Yeah there were two others along with the master Rod.

I am still shaking my head at the gullibilty of the content indie providers. Mimo has it right.

Darci was mostly correct. IUMA and MP3c both started their payment programs AFTER AMP3. Whether their payment programs were a response to AMP3 is neither here nor there. AMP3 was first.

FWIW, HIWD shut off the AMP3 database on March, 3, 2000.
