I saw the Terence Blanchard Sextet at a little 250 seat theater last nigh and it was AMAZING!!! Venezualen pianist Edward Simon tenor and alto.. Brice Winston/Aron Fletcher Bass.. Dereck Nivergelt drums.. Eric Harland an of course Mr. Terence Blanchard..trumpet this band KILLS!!!!!! I've seen Mr. Blanchard Twice now and I'm totally stuned, Haunting and often painfully beutifull. The compositions they're doing now are so fantastic!! TB be the man! I saw him around 94 playing stuff that's on Crooklyn soundtrack among others. It was a quintet and I don't remember band members, except that the bass player used to be with Art Blakey. I remember being in awe of the vibe and his control of subtle tones which is damn amazing on a trumpet. I was in a dreamlike trance (alcohol might have been the major cause), and it made me want to revere the guy. BTW, any of you guys who complain about miking and mixing at your shows, check out couple of jazz shows in your town to hear what kind of balanced sound can be achieved on stage! I guess it's not easy to compensate when the guitar player has all the juice and wants to use it cause he can't hear the monitors!!! Of course horn players complain on even more esoteric terms, like the reed had a subtle buzz or something Anyway, nothing like a good jazz session to put back humility in a musician. ------------------ IP: Logged |

ha ha!! no shit!! this stage was miked...though the drums had only one kick mike and two overheads..three mikes front stage for the tenor, alto and trumpet. one mic ( yes, a mike!!) on the bass and one in the grand. the pa was little more than support for the live sound, and the horn players moved into and away from the mics to great effect!! the only moniter on stage was the drummers.. The real key is playing at this volume..just slightly larger than life and good support for the bass. I saw Dave Holland set up once in a line across the stage Drums..bass....tenor..alto.. the only sound support was for the bass and a mic up front to talk into. this was a real cool sound as it made a natural panarama from the dark to the bright instruments..i walked around..the whole room sounded great!! anyway...i'm rambling.. ------------------ IP: Logged |
