Just curious.

Or, would you rather have this as an "Artist Only" area?

Listeners? Hell no! I don't want anyone listening to my music. They might like it and become fans and bug me. Moses, you can hang out with us but one thing: Drop the "you people" phrase. K?

Of course, Moses, you are the best.

You really appreciate the artists, even though many of them do not appreciate themselves. Sad but true.

Moses - I completely welcome you or anyone else to actively participate here. It is a pleasure to have you.

I think it is important to recognize that many folks come to this board for different reasons. Some want to promote themselves or others, some want to chat and joke and be friendly, some want to talk shop, some want to organize efforts of one type or another.

Every so often I see folks who do not approve of other's conversations make claims that those conversations are not appropriate on this board. I disagree. I think everyone should be welcome to discuss whatever is on their mind.

If we can all try to be a little more tolerant of each other and our varied reasons for being here, I think it is possible to have a very diverse yet peaceful community.

P.S. - Ragtime Lady, you need to get your stuff uploaded here, pronto. Because I said so

where the artist can post.

I think a setup like they have at musicbuilder.com would work. One bb the is just for artists and is passworded to keep things that way and one bb that general for artists and fans.

Otherwise, just leave it the same.

OK, so everyone sounds as though they like the thought of listeners being on this board. That being a fact, they may I ask why more people don't reply to the listener threads? Namely the ones where I try to promote artists?

I read them but I don't necessarily reply to them because most of the time, you are talking about new age ambient type of music which is not my cup of tea. So I wouldn't have anything useful to post anyway.

right now there isn't a lot of promo going on
you don't see the download me..review me type of threads you see at mp3.com.....mainly because it's still in beta and the artists right now are mainly concentrating on building the site correctly.......you will see threads about the contract, the features, ideas and suggestions...and maybe even a heated debate over the implementing of certain features....heaven knows it got funky over the "inferno" thing and these are mainly artists concerns.....so most activity now is centered on building the site.......not much promo yet.....after it comes out of beta and is ready for public viewing i'm sure we'll see a lot more of that........also having listeners here is fine for now....but one day it could be a drag if listeners concerns
obliterate the posts of artists concerns...then i think it would be best to have separate boards......because some things are just very important to the welfare of the site........and others are more for promo and entertainment.........things will probably change radically if this place gets thousands and thousands of artists added....

moses did you ever build a station at mp3.com ????seems that would be an excellent way to
turn people on to your favorites then all you would have to do on this or any other board is put up a link to it.......like strangecloud does with his song of the day posts..........

Moses, the reason I don't post on those threads is that I tend only to post in threads discussing the business side of things - I know which artists I like and dislike, but it's far more important that outside listeners like yourself post your approval for them than that fellow artists like me do so.

Artists, get your listeners to post on
some of the genre threads, and post there
yourselves as well.

Encourage reviews and interaction. The more
listeners you have being active then the
more legitamate the whole thing becomes.

Any time I see a listener posting I at least
try to encourage them to stay involved,
whether I like thier brand or not...

Well, Moses, there are exceptions to every rule. You, sir, are the exception.

But to me, the AABB is kinda like backstage.
Band members only.

Kenny Lee does let SOME people come backstage, generally female. Like I said there are exceptions.

Every once in a while a guy, not in the band but supportive of the music, will get to come backstage. A guy like you Moses. Don't mess with our women, Moses. Bring an extra one for Kenny Lee if you can.

Oh, yeah, I don't drink beer. Straight tequila. No drugs, either. I don't care what the drummer says.

I've tried to get many listeners involved with finding new and interesting music on the internet. Granted up until this point that's all been MP3.com. I've been testing the waters here now since March, and it doesn't really seem like the artists have the kind of enthusiasm to keep the listener's attention. Many people who I've referred to MP3.com are people who are willing to read the boards, but not become an active participant in posting. So they come here and see the artists (or many of them) are really not responding to listener interaction (this thread being an exception).

So, when I tell them that they can find new talent by promoting those artists they find to their liking, they expect that other artists with similar tastes and therefore possibly similar music will strike up an interaction or exchange with the listener just as I tell them. Unfortunately, the reality makes me look like I have it all wrong.

Now I realize that there are not as many artists active here in the early stages of development of this site, and a certain faction of the participants are more interested in discussing the shortcomings of other OMDs or maybe even this one. I grant you that to you or some of you that subject is critically important. Let me tell you though, it is at the expense of generating the kind of environment that is listener friendly. Believe me when I tell you that it is not inviting to someone who visits here to see all the benefits of Indie artist interaction. Some people have come back to me to say they were not impressed with the possibility of striking up any kind of relationship or exchange after what they have seen on the boards.

So what does that leave me (who is the exception to all of this) but to give up due to the seemingly lack of interest in developing the Indie artist relationship with listeners?

Please don't misunderstand my intentions. I am not posting these thoughts as a complaint, rant, or whining. It's just how I see it (or don't see it) that I even offer these thoughts. You may choose to believe it or not, I have better things to do with my time than to spend it somewhere where the fruits of my interests will go unrealized.

Maybe I'm not making any sense. I've tried to explain this principle before and only a small percentage of ears seem to hear what I'm saying. So maybe it's the messenger who is inadequate in this case. At any rate, I've spoken my thoughts. Take it as you wish.

Sincerely,

Moses

Is never really gonna work unless the artists
want it to. Posts like Kenny L's can turn
off listeners very quick, even if he is
being facetious, which I am not sure
he is.

There is only a backstage area to these BB's
because a major portion of the artists
won't go to the genre boards. I have heard
them say that there is not enough interaction
there... well how do you think the paying
public feels there?

Shaky Tee, Jack Falk, Matt Thorpe, Grimmbaby,
and many many many others have much
personal success on these indie sites and
interact with the lowlife listeners in the
backstage area. Sorry, its late, I'll drop
it for tonite.

Tongue in cheek, Banker. But the point is the same. Artist's board should generally be for artists, with limited exceptions.
There are other areas for listeners to interact with artists.

No disrespect to the listeners, just pointing out that this is the way it's done.

When you go to the restaurant, they don't let you go in the kitchen. You sit at the table with the other customers. People are working in the kitchen, preparing your order.

And the kitchen on mp3.com is so messy at times that people may not want to eat there at all if we let them in.

When I go to a restaurant they bring the
menu and food out to me, they don't make
me go into the kitchen and get it.

These BB's are about music, and listeners
are about music. And the thrill of the indie
websites is the interaction with the artists
and the new thoughts and music being
bandied about.

I haven't been to a music site yet that
has a BB for artists that listeners don't
have access to, in some way or another. And
if there is one, and the artists won't go
to the listener areas, why would I go back?

If a tree falls in the forest and no one
hears it, does it make a sound?

I have also not been to an indie site that
the artists have not invited the listeners
in.

There are a number of artists that feel the
way you do. I respect them and stay out of
their threads. Very few stay away from the
listener threads.

Should listeners be given carte blanche?
No. Ultimately this is the artist BB and
the artists rule. Majority vote, consensus,
logic, hey, I will abide by the decision of
the artists.

There are not too many listeners that
participate on a regular basis that drag
a BB down into flames and non music related
issues. Actually, I can't think of one.

Here's my scroll on the artist flamers...
.........................................
.........................................
.......<these dots are all names and ....
etcetera's>......................

Let me know how you want to proceed. It is
your community.

Lately, Banker, the flamers both here and at mp3.com are anonymous. I participate in the "news" section at mp3.com and yesterday I got called a fag and a dickhead by "anonymous". Other people called "anonymous" posted that they agreed with me on my posting however. They were ALL called anonymous. Recently a post from "anonymous" flamed me for posting my url with my posts. I replied that one of the reasons I did that was so people would know I was not "anonymous".

Are these "anonymous" authors artists or listeners or employees or Govt. agents? I don't know.

Anyhow, as far as marketing your music goes, some artists are real close to their listeners and some want to stay distant.
We each make our choices as to who we interact with. That is an individual choice.

The OMD website is different. As a general rule they should keep the artists area for artists only. There are some exceptions to this, I'm sure. There are plenty of opportunities for artists to interact with their listeners at both the sites we are discussing. If the artists choose not to interact with the listeners it may be hurting their career, as you suggest, but that should be the artists choice. Not the websites.

If the artists have a choice, that is.

Kenny Lee

Kenny, no one else seems to want to get
involved in the conversation between you and
I. Besides, I can't tell if you are ignoring
me or agreeing with me.

You are right about one thing. This is the
artist area, and you are coming through
clearly on one point...you don't want to
interact with listeners on the AABB.

I will respect that. Cheers. Make More!

I think that clearly there is a need for a place where artists can talk to each other about issues that concern them.

Clearly there is a need for a place for Artists to interact with Listeners.

It is now clear to me that the two places must be seperate. One conflicts with the other.

I am not sure what to do about it.

As soon as it is separated, then it will discourage listeners from posting and being active members of the "artist" community. I believe that if it is separated, the artists will undoubtedly post mainly to the "artist only" area. I have been posting to, and have been a member of the Electronic BB at MP3c for a year now, and have enjoyed the opportunity of interacting with the artists. There are other listeners who also post there and I'm sure many more who just "read" the posts. If that relationship were terminated, there would be a fewer number of listeners who would become active members.

I can understand that many artists would like an "Artist Only" area to discuss "Artist Only" issues, but as soon as that happens, most of the artists would neglect the "artist - listener" area. I know many people have pointed out that I am the exception to the "Listeners" participating in an interactive way with the artists, but I firmly believe that there are many listeners that "lurk" and do nothing but read the posts. Several; of them are people I referred to "Artist" boards.

So all I'm saying, is be careful what you ask for. It might have an outcome that you may not necessarily desire.
