Are any of you on that site? How are you doing with reviews? We seem to get one review every couple weeks. Does anyone know how they decide when a band/artists gets reviewed?

The reviews come up randomly in their review process.

Some stuff does seem to come up more than once, I reviewed the same song twice in once session, gave it a 5 then gave it a 4. Fickle me, hehe. I was wondering why the damn thing sounded so familar!

The same thing happened to me (duplicate review in one session). According to the document on the front page we are supposed to get reviewed 'thousands' of times. I took a look for some people and noticed that all I saw was a handful of reviews. I also noticed that the famous 'Fisher' is at the top for this month.

Maybe that is why Nate wants to pull FoN off that site-

He said there was something "Fishery" going on there.

I've done several reviews, but only received 5 for my own song - which has been there for over 6 months! Some reviews were very positive, others were downright pathetic.

I have recently learned that some artists have been "slamming" other artists by voting down their music. Garageband could be an example of that - as is Riffage.

The fact that "Fisher" is all of a sudden in the top spot only makes me more suspicious than I was before. And I mean no disprespect towards Fisher.

It seems only certain songs end up in the rotation - lord knows why. I was reviewing the "pop/rock" section and ended up reviewing 2 Goth songs. What's up with that?

Overall, I find the site useless. Unless you're lucky, chances are your song will drop like a lead ballon from lack of exposure alone.

I am considering launching a new site that features objective reviews of the artist and not production tips and comments on how much compression to use on vocal tracks! If there's one thing that pisses me off, it's a "review" where the reviewer all of a sudden becomes a "producer" and says nothing about the song and only offers their tips on what ratio of compression to reverb you should use!

If were all fortunate enough to record at the 128 track Hilversum Studio in Holland with a kick as engineer and producer, maybe I wouldn't care so much, but for the most part, a lot of us are recording on beer budgets in our home studios.

..sorry about the rant.

Yeah, I know what you mean Robert. I have nothing against Fisher either, she is talented and has a bright future ahead of her. It just seems like she has 'financial' backing that most of us don't and I'm not sure if that is what GarageBand.com is looking for. I mean one day I looked at all the mp3sites I have music on and she was simultaneously the featured artist on almost all of them. I think it's getting down to all of us need our own sites that just say we are great and winners of all the contests because none of them seem to be objective. If you get an objective review site going make sure you post the link over here.

Actually, The intent of this thread was just to get an idea of how others were doing or how they viewed their experiences with Garageband.com It wasn't intended as a 'slam' GB.com thread. I still hope to hear 'some' positive feedback about it but it doesn't look like any is amongst people here.

Jim,

Hopefully I answered your questions at the beginning of my original post. If I came across as slamming GB, well, I s'pose I was in a way for reasons stated above.

I really wish I had better things to say, but I haven't heard one good thing about GB.

Yeah, everything doesn't seem right at Garageband, I reviewed the same band 3 times in one afternoon, I don't fully believe it's just a technical problem.

BUT, it seems like a decent place to upload ONE song, I've received some pretty cool reviews and like the fact that it's another place where people who wouldn't normally find us, do.

Peace,
Stephen

P.S.
JamFree has just released a new CD on MusicBuilder, the previews of the songs don't seem to be working yet so I'm not fully promoting yet. It's definitely a CD worth the money. A good mix of stuff, some highly experimental, some almost pop, way better sound quality than anything else we've uploaded previously (I mean 10 times better).

True, I had a CD of our old stuff there for a while as a test and indeed the printing, packaging, sound and overall quality was far better than the DAMs. With our new CD I've encoded all the tracks at 320kb so there should be no discernable difference from the original wavs. . . at least none that I can hear .

Hi all,

I've got 1 song at GB. Posted in december, received 7 reviews so far, 2 good, 3 bad, 2 indifferrent, top position in the 4000 range. My top of the head suspicion/hunch is that your band will get more review spots relative to how many reviews of other bands you do. Just a guess and probably wrong. Who knows.

It would seem that GB has upped their minimum from 5 to 10 pairs of reviewed songs per one upload as of Midnight last night.

Gabriel,
I have also suspected that there may be a connection to my reviews I give and the number of reviews I get. I think I will try an experiment soon to up my reviews and see if it helps. I will post if it does.

SaintH,
That is pretty interesting. It must meen GB is inundated with artists.

Yeah, Musicbuilder are the one OMD that actually seem to give professional service. The CDs are far better than those on MP3C. Unfortunately they're low-traffic compared to some of the others, but if you use them for CD sales rather than some kind of popularity contest then they're the best site so far...

I don't think the number of reviews you give has anything to do with the number you receive. I've never noticed a correllation.

That said, I really have no idea how that place works. I'll go weeks without a review, then one song will get 10 in 2 days.

We have 10 songs up at GB. Some are doing well, others not.

I've also sent several pieces of email to their support staff, and gotten answers to all my questions. Here's a summary"

1) Written reviews are optional, so just because you see 5 reviews doesn't mean that you haven't had 25 reviews total.

Indeed, with our 10 songs, I've noticed that some songs seem to incite people to write something, while other more mainstream songs people don't bother writing anything, but it still keeps going up in the charts.

2) They purposely have you occasionally review the same song. This is to get an idea about the "want to hear again" question. And, indeed, I have to admit that sometimes on the second listen I give a better rating. It can be a leveler.

3) You start at the bottom, and move up. A good review will roughly move you up 500 points, a bad review the opposite.

4) Metal songs get alot more listens than Alternative and Rock songs.

5) I'm definitly sensing that other artists are purposely tanking reviews. Here's why I belive this:

The songs that I feel are weaker are higher up in the ratings. The songs that we've had the most consistenly outstanding reviews on by real press and other artists and people we know are at the bottom. One song that people seem to always love has 5 bad ratings and one good. I just can't believe that everyone's hating it on GB, while everyone else we've ever talked to loves it.

Indeed, the songs that's highest rated is definitly the weakest song we have up.

Last, for about two weeks I carefully wrote down the positions of each of the ten songs every day, and watched as they went up, and noted when a written review happened too. This is how I came up with the up/down 500 at a time thing.

Anyways, there have have it. My ramblings for the day.

I said the same thing to myself... Maybe GB is just another promo place for artists. If you've got more money (or a record deal) You end up at the front of the line, as usual.

I wouldn't doubt it, Jim. I dunno. I've been trying to figure the Fisher thing out for a week or two, it makes no sense. If the whole point of being at garageband.com is to compete for a $250,000 record contract, then why is she there? She just signed that big interscope/farmclub thing. Plus, what happens if she wins? She's at #3 right now.

I have no idea. I also can't figure out why "Rock!" by His Purse has received 9 or 10 written reviews, all overwhelmingly positive, and is stuck at #4000 or so. I guess everyone who's not choosing to write a text review is giving us a "1." I noticed other songs jumping after good reviews just like Holy Zoo did, but this song hasn't budged an inch no matter how good the review is.

Maybe we should all write letters to Sir George Martin saying "Hey, your Knighthood, what the fuck is up with that site you're associated with?" I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

At least they've put in some safeguards against the rampant shit-slinging that was going on at first. It's a nicer place now, but they need to be more forthcoming about their system.

Yes, I think maybe Sir George would help us.
I guess we shouldn't get too serious about it but I think Fisher getting that record deal really makes the GB contest for her inconsequential. Unless it's for promotional purposes Which if it is, doesn't put GB in a good light, IMHO.

I should have been more clear.

Metal songs get reviewed faster.

They say that ever songs gets the exact same number of reviews in the end. My metal songs is headed towards that goal a lot faster than the alternative songs, being reviewed many more times than the other songs, even though they all went up at the same time.

Anyways, since Fisher has just signed to a label (FarmClub), their participation is pretty much mute now, eh?
